Pittsburgh to DC

Towpaths, Canals, and Washington D.C.
EASY BIKING      14 DAYS
Trip #PDC

Easy biking on beautiful bike paths.

Coal, steel and the likes of Mellon and Carnegie may have built this city with a deep history in its industrial past, but modern Pittsburgh is it a sight to behold. From PNC Park to the Andy Warhol museum to the Duquesne Incline and the convergence of the Three Rivers, it provides a delightful experience for the non-city dweller. Then imagine a bike journey that follows wild rivers, passes through shaded forests, and intersects with charming trailside communities.

The biking begins two days later in Duquesne, on the Great Allegheny Passage, a segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, providing a nearly level ride. Your group will cycle approximately 135 miles on the path before the connecting with the C&O Canal trail. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is located along the north bank of the Potomac River running approximately 184 miles, beginning in Cumberland, Maryland and ending, for our group, at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC. The group will enjoy two days in Washington and Alexandria, Viriginia, with a guided tour through our Capital (leaving you smarter and more informed about the workings of our Federal City!) as well as sightseeing and shopping before departing for home

When we came to a town that was interesting, we’d take a longer lunch time, and explore. When we’d see a pretty spot we’d stop and take a group picture. When we’d see a good beach, we would swim. The trip was run by what we opted to do, and that’s what made it perfect. Many camps treat you like a little kid, trapped in what the adults want you to do, but the SHP people make it possible for you to choose, but still stay safe and within reason!

I wouldn’t trade this summer for anything, it was the best of my life! If I were to sum up my SHP trip, I would have to say that I learned the most in these two weeks then anytime else in my life.
