England and France

Castles and chateaux, tea and French pastries
MODERATE BIKING      30 DAYS
Trip #EFR

When you think of England, do you think “Shakespeare – not!” Well, England has so much more! The local team may let you try rugby, a combination of football and soccer, only livelier. Watch for the modern "Tanks Crossing" signs as you visit ancient Stonehenge. Enjoy all the charm and character of the little cottages with their carefully–tended gardens, the hedgerows and the winding lanes as you leisurely cycle past.

English villages are full of surprises, and it is so easy to visit – they speak our language (or do we speak theirs?).Oxford is a university town with a beautiful campus, and you may try punting on the Thames. On foot in London, you will visit the Tower of London, listen for Big Ben, ride a double–decker bus, see the Changing of the Guard, and view the city from the amazing London Eye! Then you'll ferry to Cherbourg, France, where you will bike along the Normandy coast. You will cross the moving sands to climb up through the village and see the island abbey of Mont St. Michel.

Swinging south into the Loire Valley, you'll cycle along the river and tour some of the magnificent chateaux. You might stop in a village patisserie for a delectable French pastry or some French bread and cheese. Practice a few phrases to break the ice and you will find that folks in small towns are delighted if you speak to them in French (it impresses your French teacher, too!). The trip ends in Paris, where you can relax on the Left Bank. You will also explore The Louvre and Notre Dame, go up the Eiffel Tower and stroll the Champs Elysees.

“For the past three weeks my biking companions have become my family. I expected that I would love England, but what I didn’t realize is that I would learn more about myself. This trip has given me more confidence in myself and in my ability to handle things alone. I learned how to live with a group of eleven different personalities. Some I loved, some I like, but none will I ever forget.”

Susan Katz, tripper

“I can’t quite put into words what leading our trip has meant to me. It was by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done as well as being one of the greatest times of my life. Thank you so much for making that possible. Gordy (Gordon Scannell, leader 1972 and 1974) was thrilled to hear all about our adventures and look at pictures from our trip. He is glad to know that not too much has changed since his era - that the same integrity and care is being put into childrens’ summers as it was 30 years ago. It’s really a remarkable program.”

Jon Moncton, leader
